TS7700 Spectrophotometer: Key Points for Measuring Metal Enclosure Color

Measuring color on metal enclosures with the TS7700

3nh TS7700 Spectrophotometer — Key Points for Metal Enclosure Color Testing

Purpose

The 3nh TS7700 spectrophotometer is used to measure L*a*b* color data and ΔE on metal enclosures. It helps control product appearance consistency and supports quality inspection. Applications include metal housings, consumer-electronics enclosures and automotive metal parts.

Color measurement basics

Color space: CIE Lab.
L*: lightness (0 = black, 100 = white).
a*: red (+) to green (−).
b*: yellow (+) to blue (−).
ΔE*: overall color difference; a smaller value indicates a closer match.

Simplified measurement workflow

1. Prepare three metal enclosures with clean surfaces free of oil and dirt.
2. Initialize the instrument: power it on, check calibration, and install the small-aperture measuring head (SAV).
3. Set the measurement parameters: D65 illuminant, 10° observer and CIE Lab color mode.
4. Measure the master standard first to obtain L*a*b*, then measure the product sample; the instrument calculates ΔE* automatically.
5. Review L*a*b*, ΔL*, Δa*, Δb* and ΔE*. Data can be exported and analyzed on a computer.

Points to note when measuring metal surfaces

Use SCI mode, which includes specular reflection; the source recommends this for reflective metal surfaces. The integrating-sphere 8° geometry supports stable metal-color measurement. Keep the surface clean and free of fingerprints and oil. Take an average of 3–5 locations for a more objective result. Calibrate before measurement.

Standards and acceptance

National and industry standards generally emphasize consistent color with no discoloration or rust spots. Acceptable color-difference limits are usually defined for each project. The TS7700 can be configured with a tolerance and can automatically display PASS/FAIL.

Applicable industries

Consumer-electronics metal enclosure inspection; automotive metal-part painting; electroplating and metal processing; coatings, paint and powder coating; laboratories and quality control.
