How Does Color Difference Data Compare with Human Color Perception?
How People Perceive Color Differences
How much color difference is acceptable?
A numerical color difference value can help describe how far apart two colors are, but how noticeable that difference appears depends on the observer, viewing conditions, sample, and application. The following ranges are a general perceptual reference:
ΔE 0.0–0.50 — Very small difference; generally barely perceptible.
ΔE 0.5–1.51 — Small difference; perceived as slight.
ΔE 1.5–3 — Relatively small difference; noticeable.
ΔE 3–6 — Larger difference; readily appreciable.
ΔE above 6 — Large difference; strong and obvious.
These ranges are indicative guidance rather than universal pass/fail limits. Different ΔE formulas, instruments, lighting, surface texture, observer sensitivity, and industry requirements can affect the result. For production quality control, establish tolerances that match the product and application, use consistent measurement and viewing conditions, and compare instrumental readings with visual evaluation where appropriate.
