Coating Thickness Gauge

How to Choose a Paint Thickness Gauge: Substrate, Coating and Measurement Conditions

For paint, powder coating and anti-corrosion layers on steel, magnetic measurement may be suitable. For non-conductive coatings on non-magnetic metals such as aluminum or copper, compare eddy-current measurement. For electroplating, multilayer structures or special substrates, first identify each layer material and the thickness to be measured.

Fulcrum Technology offers the YT6500, YT8500 and LS226 coating thickness gauges. Compare them by coating range, flat or curved surfaces, probe access and data-recording needs. Selection should account for both substrate and coating; the terms “paint” or “plating” alone do not establish compatibility.

First identify the substrate and coating combination

Magnetic metal substrate | non-magnetic coating

For paint, powder coating and some non-magnetic metal coatings on steel, consider the magnetic measurement principle. Confirm substrate thickness, coating magnetism, coating range and surface condition.

Non-magnetic metal substrate | non-conductive coating

For paint, insulating coatings or compatible anodized layers on aluminum or copper, consider eddy-current measurement. Metal plating is conductive, so the conditions for ordinary non-conductive coatings cannot be applied directly.

Electroplated, multilayer or special substrates

Provide the substrate, the material of each layer and the measurement purpose. Magnetic nickel layers, coatings on plastic or wood, and requirements to distinguish individual layers all require separate checks of the instrument and method.

How to compare the YT6500, YT8500 and LS226

YT6500 | Integrated probe for quick measurements

The instrument and probe are integrated, making it suitable for handheld spot checks where the measurement point is easy to reach. Confirm range, substrate conditions and calibration for paint, powder coating or anti-corrosion layers.

YT8500 | Separate probe operation

The probe is separate from the instrument, which suits work that requires changing the probe angle or measuring where the main unit cannot be placed nearby. For narrow spaces and curved surfaces, first confirm probe size, contact area and positioning conditions.

LS226 | Flat-sample measurement and data management

Its integrated probe, gravity-based pressure and dual-screen design suit flat coating samples. The range is 0–2000 μm; it supports 1–5 point calibration and Bluetooth app data management. Check phone-system compatibility before use.

Confirm suitability for each model based on the substrate, coating, measurement-point size and calibration conditions. Range or resolution alone does not represent measurement accuracy.

Common questions about paint thickness gauges

Must stainless steel always use the non-ferrous mode?

Do not decide from the name “stainless steel” alone. Magnetism varies by grade and processing condition. Check the actual substrate, select a compatible mode and verify the readings.

Can curved surfaces, edges or small parts be measured directly?

Confirm that the probe can make stable contact and check the model’s minimum measurement area, curvature and substrate-thickness requirements. Edges, rough surfaces or unstable positioning can affect readings; verify with the actual sample first.

How is a paint thickness gauge different from a material thickness gauge?

The instruments on this page are intended to assess compatible coatings on metal substrates. To measure sheet, pipe walls or the workpiece itself, compare the Thickness Gauges and Ultrasonic Thickness Gauges; coatings on multilayer or non-metal substrates may require a different method based on their structure.

When asking for advice, provide these four details

  • Substrate material, grade and thickness, plus the coating or plating materials and layer sequence.
  • Estimated coating-thickness range, acceptance tolerance and any specified test method.
  • Measurement-point size, flat or curved surface, probe-access space and sample photos.
  • Spot-check frequency, record/export needs, and the phone or computer system in use.
