How to Choose a Transmittance and Optical Density Meter: Sample Clarity, Optical Path, and Size

For installed automotive or architectural glass, consider the split-type LS110 transmittance meter. For uniform transparent materials such as glass, PC, and PMMA, compare the LS116 parallel-beam transmittance meter. For milky, frosted, or translucent materials, or when optical density (OD) data is required, consider the LS117 diffuse-transmission optical density meter.

LS110 | Split Type · LS116 | Parallel Beam · LS117 | Diffuse Transmission + OD

LS110 | Installed Glass and On-Site Measurement

The main unit and auxiliary unit are separate, making it suitable for vehicle windshields, architectural doors and windows, and large transparent glass. During measurement, both sides of the sample must be accessible, and the light source must align with the receiver.

LS116 | Uniform Transparent and Thicker Materials

Uses a parallel-beam optical path to compare transmittance in glass, PC, PMMA, and filmed glass. It has a stand and a detachable probe, making it suitable for fixed quality-control setups and on-site measurements.

LS117 | Diffuse-Transmission Materials and Optical Density

Displays transmittance and OD at the same time. Suitable for optical-density testing of milky and frosted materials, photographic film, X-ray film, aluminized film, and similar samples. Confirm sample thickness, curvature, and fixture method for each application.

—: This measurement function is not available. Resolution is the smallest displayed change; it is not the same as accuracy. Confirm specifications and range segments for the supplied version. These three models measure visible-light transmittance; the stated band does not mean they output wavelength-by-wavelength spectral data or measure UV/infrared transmittance.

Transmittance, Optical Density, and Haze Are Different Measurements

Transmittance expresses the proportion of light passing through as a percentage; transmission optical density (OD) evaluates light blocking. Regular-transmission and diffuse-transmission optical paths collect scattered light differently. Keep the measurement method and sample conditions consistent when comparing batches or customer acceptance data.

For standardized haze, total transmittance, or clarity testing, also compare haze meters and transmittance measurement systems.

Provide These 4 Details When Requesting a Recommendation

  • Sample material and a photo, plus whether it is clear, frosted, milky, or has low transmittance.
  • Sample dimensions and thickness, whether it is already installed, and whether both sides are accessible for measurement.
  • Whether you need transmittance, optical density (OD), or another metric, and the expected measurement range.
  • Existing equipment, customer-required standards, and current quality-control issues.
