Optical, UV and Material Inspection Equipment
How to Choose Optical, UV and Material Testing Equipment?
First, identify whether you need to measure light transmittance, optical density, or UV intensity and energy. For transparent materials, compare light transmittance meters; for low-transmittance, light-blocking or diffuse-transmission materials, compare optical density equipment. For UV sources and curing processes, select instruments based on source wavelength, measurement range, and intensity/energy requirements.
Choose Equipment by Measurement Objective
Light Transmittance | Transparent Materials
Glass, films, automotive window film, lenses and protective films can be evaluated based on sample size, thickness, and visible-light / UV / infrared measurement needs. Supported wavelength ranges and optical paths differ by model, so confirm the actual test item first.
Optical Density | Low-Transmittance and Light-Blocking Materials
For film, X-ray film, metallized film, or other low-transmittance materials, consider transmission optical density (OD). For milky, frosted, or diffusely transmitting samples, also confirm that the instrument optical path and measurement range are suitable.
UV | Light Sources and Curing Processes
First confirm whether the source is a mercury lamp, UV LED, or another type, then provide its wavelength and measurement range. UV intensity describes the level of irradiation at a given moment; UV energy describes the accumulated amount over the exposure period. Whether both are supported depends on the model and probe.
Thickness, Coating Thickness and Hardness | Related Categories
If you need to measure material dimensions or mechanical properties, you can also compare Thickness Gauges, Coating Thickness Gauges or Hardness Testers, based on the material, substrate and test method.
Two Points to Clarify When Selecting Equipment
High Transmittance Does Not Always Mean Clear Vision
If you also need to evaluate haze or image clarity in transparent materials, compare Haze Meters and Transmittance Measurement Equipment, and confirm whether haze or clarity functions are required.
UV Intensity and Energy Are Not Interchangeable
Intensity is commonly expressed in mW/cm², while accumulated energy is commonly expressed in mJ/cm². Confirm the source wavelength, probe spectral response, measurement distance and exposure time. Do not select a probe based only on UVA / UVB / UVC labels.
Provide These Four Items When Requesting a Recommendation
- Sample material, photos, dimensions and thickness; for UV applications, provide the source type and wavelength.
- The measurement item, expected range, and any customer-specified test standard.
- How the instrument will be used on site and the measurement position and distance; for curing processes, also provide exposure time or line speed.
- Your current quality-control issue and whether you need records, reports or data integration.
