Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge | Material, Pipe Wall and Coating Measurement

How to Choose an Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge: First Identify Whether You Measure Material, Pipe Walls, or Coatings

For routine material and pipe-wall thickness checks, consider LS211 ultrasonic thickness gauge; for coating, multilayer measurements, and waveform analysis, compare LS216 high-precision ultrasonic thickness gauge. Their applications differ; confirm material, thickness range, probe, and distinguishable echoes before selection.

Ultrasonic thickness measurement requires suitable sound-velocity settings, coupling, and a suitable surface. For a quotation, provide the sample material, estimated thickness, measurement-point size, and whether you need a single material thickness or layer-by-layer measurements.

Compare models by measurement target

LS211 | Material and pipe-wall thickness

For materials that transmit ultrasound effectively, including metals, plastics, glass, and ceramics. Suitable for checking sheet, machined-part, and pipe-wall thickness. Select the probe based on measurement-point size, curvature, material structure, and temperature.

To measure a substrate through a surface coating, confirm the supplied version and the conditions for using the standard probe and E-E mode. This differs from directly measuring coating thickness.

LS216 | Coatings, multilayer structures, and waveform analysis

Depending on the probe and sample, it can measure coatings on plastic, wood, glass, or metal, as well as material thickness. Real-time waveform display helps identify echoes and measurement boundaries.

Supports measurement of up to three coating layers or coating-and-substrate combinations. Confirm layer thicknesses, sound velocities, and whether interface echoes can be distinguished. A suitable probe must be confirmed separately for coatings on concrete.

Ultrasonic or coating thickness gauge: which do you need?

For material, sheet, or pipe-wall thickness, consider an ultrasonic thickness gauge. For paint or compatible plating on metal substrates, compare coating thickness gauges and confirm substrate magnetism and coating conductivity.

For coatings on nonmetal substrates such as plastic or wood, or when layer-by-layer thickness data is needed, consider LS216. Confirm the measurement principle against the sample structure; the product name “thickness gauge” alone is not enough.
