How to Choose a Colorimeter: Measurement Method, Sample Conditions and QC Needs
3nh colorimeters are suited to quick color-difference comparisons, incoming inspection, production-line checks, batch color verification and routine quality control. When selecting a model, do not compare only price or ΔE functions. First confirm whether the sample can be positioned steadily, whether measurements must be taken on the move, the measurement area, surface condition and quality-control workflow.
If you mainly need quick L*a*b*, ΔE and other color-difference data, start by evaluating a colorimeter. If you also need spectral data, multi-illuminant color evaluation, SCI/SCE, metamerism evaluation or specified color-management functions, compare a spectrophotometer. Confirm actual supported functions against the specifications of each model.
First decide: vertical or horizontal colorimeter
Vertical Colorimeter
Suitable for mobile measurements, incoming inspection, production-line checks and quick on-site color comparisons. Select a large-aperture, dual-aperture or standard single-aperture model according to sample area, surface texture and QC needs.
View Vertical ColorimetersHorizontal Colorimeter
Suitable for benchtop QC environments where samples can be positioned steadily and measurement locations are fixed. If sample and measurement-point conditions are consistent, or you need benchtop batch comparisons and incoming inspection, compare horizontal models with different apertures.
View Horizontal ColorimetersWhat sample conditions matter when choosing a colorimeter?
Measurement area and aperture
Small spots, ordinary flat surfaces, large areas, textured samples and uneven color distributions may require different measurement apertures.
Sample surface condition
For glossy, matte, rough, textured or curved samples, confirm that the instrument method suits the actual measurement point.
Quality-control workflow
Incoming inspection, production-line checks, reference-sample comparisons, batch tracking and customer acceptance may require different instrument functions and data-management capabilities.
What about liquids, soft samples or samples unsuitable for contact measurement?
For transparent or translucent liquids, consider a Liquid Colorimeter; for samples unsuitable for contact measurement, surfaces that deform easily or in-line measurement, consider a Non-Contact Colorimeter. Confirm suitability based on the sample, test purpose and QC workflow.
How should L*a*b* and ΔE color-difference data be interpreted?
