Liquid Colorimeter
How to Choose a Liquid Colorimeter: Measurement Indices, Transparency and Cuvette Path Length
The 3nh benchtop liquid colorimeters analyze transmitted color, liquid color, ΔE color difference and transmittance in transparent and translucent liquids. Fulcrum Technology provides selection advice for the TS4003, TS4010 and TS4020, comparing instruments for quality control in food and beverages, solvents, chemical liquids, cosmetics and laboratories.
First confirm whether you need L*a*b*, color difference, transmittance or a specified index such as APHA/Hazen/Pt-Co platinum-cobalt color or Gardner. Then check sample transparency, available sample volume and cuvette path length. Results from different path lengths or sample preparation conditions should not be treated as directly comparable.
Before measuring liquid color, confirm these three points
Transparency and sample condition
Confirm whether the liquid is transparent, translucent, cloudy or contains suspended matter. Bubbles, sediment and sample non-uniformity can affect results. Establish consistent sampling and preparation procedures in accordance with the test method.
Specified indices and acceptance method
Liquid color indices, L*a*b*, ΔE and transmittance serve different purposes. If the customer specifies a color scale, illuminant, color-difference formula or acceptance limit, confirm instrument and software support for each requirement during selection.
Cuvette, path length and sample volume
Confirm the cuvette material, size and path length, along with the available sample volume. For batch comparisons, keep the path length, cuvette orientation and measurement conditions consistent, and ensure the liquid level covers the optical path.
How do the TS4003, TS4010 and TS4020 compare?
First narrow down options by operating method and sample volume, then confirm the required color indices, cuvette configuration and data management functions.
TS4003 | Computer software operation
Designed for computer-based operation and data management. Connects via USB to quality management software for liquid color, transmittance and color-difference analysis. Suitable for workstations with a computer that need centralized measurement data management.
TS4010 | Touchscreen operation
Equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen for viewing spectral and color-difference data on the instrument. The manufacturer also lists an audit trail function. If on-site operation and measurement records are important, confirm that user permissions, records and reports meet your internal procedures.
TS4020 | Micro-volume liquid measurement
Consider the TS4020 when sample volume is limited. The manufacturer specifies micro-volume transmittance measurement down to 1 mL. It requires a compatible cuvette and measurement configuration; this should not be assumed to work with every path length or sample.
How should cloudy liquids, haze and opaque samples be handled?
Cloudiness, suspended particles and sediment change light scattering or transmission. First confirm whether the test is intended to measure liquid color or turbidity, and whether the method permits filtration, dilution or other preparation. Do not change the sample and directly compare it against existing acceptance limits.
For haze and total transmittance measurements of glass, transparent plastics or films, compare haze and transmittance measurement instruments; transmittance data from an instrument does not mean it can directly replace a specified haze test.
For surface color measurements of opaque liquids, powders or solids, also consider a reflectance measurement solution and compare, based on contact conditions, a colorimeter or a spectrophotometer.
Before asking about a liquid colorimeter, provide these details
- Sample type, transparency and color depth; whether it contains suspended matter, sediment or bubbles.
- Required color indices, color-difference formula, transmittance or customer-specified test method.
- Available sample volume and the material, size and path length of the current cuvette.
- Intended use and data requirements, such as batch comparison, customer acceptance, reports or audit trails.
