In-Line Monitoring of Vacuum Aluminum Coating Thickness
Applications of Vacuum Coating Monitoring
Applications of vacuum coating monitoring
Vacuum-metallized aluminum composite films are used not only in packaging but also in communications, agriculture, industry, and scientific research, giving them significant market potential.
However, relatively few vacuum-coating manufacturers consistently produce high-quality metallized aluminum film. The vacuum-coating industry is still developing, and some manufacturers lack suitable monitoring equipment, such as an in-line thickness gauge for vacuum coating. Without in-process monitoring, it is difficult to control coating-thickness uniformity. This can lead to inconsistent product quality, lower production efficiency, and higher costs.
Vacuum-coating quality depends on several factors, including equipment, operator skill, technical guidance, and appropriate process conditions. A major factor affecting the quality of vacuum-coated products is the uniformity of the coating-layer thickness.
Metallized aluminum film is commonly used in packaging that requires barrier or light-shielding performance. The thickness, surface condition, and adhesion strength of the aluminum layer directly affect the film's performance. Quality inspection therefore considers layer thickness, adhesion, and surface condition.
The aluminum layer on a vacuum-metallized film is extremely thin, so conventional thickness-measurement instruments may not be able to measure it appropriately. One quality-evaluation method is optical-density measurement. Metallized films commonly have an optical density of 1–3, corresponding to a light transmittance of approximately 10%–0.1%. A higher optical-density value indicates a thicker aluminum layer.
Fulcrum Technology offers the LS152 in-line vacuum-coating thickness gauge, which directly measures the optical density and transmittance of metallized aluminum film. These readings can help assess product quality.
For manufacturers who need to control coating uniformity across high-volume production lines, the LS152 can be installed for continuous monitoring on a vacuum-coating line. Ongoing measurement helps manufacturers maintain product quality, improve production-line efficiency, and reduce production costs.
