High-Shear Homogenizers for Biomedical Materials and Formulation Development
High-Shear Homogenizer Applications in Biomedical Materials and Formulation Development
High-shear homogenizers are used for emulsification, dispersion, homogenization, deagglomeration, suspension processing and formulation pre-mixing. A rotating rotor and stationary stator create intense shear, impact, turbulence and circulation through a narrow gap, rapidly dispersing droplets, powder agglomerates and particles. Compared with a standard mixer, this process is useful when a formulation needs improved emulsification, dispersion uniformity or suspension stability.
Typical applications include preparing and screening coarse nanoemulsions and oil-water formulations; pre-processing solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN/NLC), drug-delivery systems and active ingredients; and mixing colloids, powder suspensions, polymers, hydrogel composites, cosmetics and biotechnology formulations. High shear is generally a formulation pre-processing step. Target particle size, encapsulation efficiency and stability must be confirmed for the specific formulation and downstream process, such as high-pressure homogenization or ultrasonication.
What to assess before selecting equipment
Before selecting equipment, assess sample volume and viscosity, oil or powder content, heat sensitivity, vessel size, working head, speed, processing time, continuous operation and scale-up needs.
High shear can raise sample temperature; heat-sensitive materials may require shorter runs, intermittent operation or cooling. For reproducible results, keep speed, time, head position, vessel, temperature, addition sequence and oil-to-water ratio consistent, and record particle size, viscosity and stability.
Model selection guide

M60/M90: Support pilot-scale work, batch scale-up and pre-production process simulation. Confirm suitability against actual samples and process goals.
Frequently asked questions
How is a high-shear homogenizer different from a standard mixer?
Rotor-stator shear enables emulsification, dispersion and deagglomeration, making it useful when a sample needs improved dispersion.
Can it be used for nanoemulsions?
It can prepare nanoemulsions, but achieving a target nanoscale particle size requires testing.
Is it suitable for biomedical materials or drug-delivery research?
It can serve as a formulation pre-processing tool; confirm suitability based on material properties and downstream analysis.
Can it process heat-sensitive samples?
Monitor temperature and consider shorter runs, intermittent operation or cooling.
How should I select a model?
Provide sample type, volume, viscosity, composition, processing objective and scale-up requirements to Fulcrum Technology for an application assessment of M25, EM300-T, EH500-T or M60/M90.
